Background on the CE-5 (Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind) Initiative by CSETI (Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence) (Director: Steven Greer, MD - Website: www.cseti.org):

Definition: CE-5 is a term describing a fifth category of close encounters with Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ETI), characterized by mutual, bilateral communication rather than unilateral contact. The CE-5 Initiative has as its central focus bilateral ETI-human communication based on mutual respect and universal principles of exchange and contact. CE types 1-4 are essentially passive, reactive and ETI initiated. A CE-5 is distinguished from these by conscious, voluntary and proactive human-initiated or cooperative contacts with ETI. Evidence exists indicating that CE-5s have successfully occurred in the past, and the inevitable maturing of the human/ETI relationship requires greater research and outreach efforts into this possibility. While ultimate control of such contact and exchange will (and probably should) remain with the technologically more advanced intelligent life forms (i.e., ETI), this does not lessen the importance of conscientious, voluntary human initiatives, contact and follow-up to conventional CE-s types 1-4.

CSETI is the only worldwide effort to concentrate on putting trained teams of investigators into the field where 1) active waves of UFO activity are occurring, or 2) in an attempt to vector UFOs into a specific area for the purposes of initiating communication. Contact protocols include the use of light, sound, and thought. Thought - specifically consciousness - is the primary mode of initiating contact.

Introduction:

The following is an account - from my point of view - of events that occurred during a CSETI investigative team activation to Monterrey, Mexico in Decemer of 1994. While necessarily somewhat subjective based on my own experiences, every attempt has been made to present an accurate depiction of events that were experienced by myself and our team.

CSETI Reacts to Flap in Mexico:

After seeing a tape of a "Hard Copy" program showing an active wave of UFO activity in Monterrey, Mexico - the third largest metropolis in Mexico - we made an effort to contact the researcher who had taken those videos. Santiago Yturria is a thorough researcher and skilled videographer who, along with Diana Perla Chapa, the host of a popular live talk show on Mexican network television, has had a UFO group for over 20 years in the state of Nuevo Leone.

Dr. Steven Greer, international director of CSETI, activated a CSETI Rapid Mobilization Investigative Team (RMIT) to Monterrey to investigate this current flap. Santiago, Diana, and the entire Ovni Club of N.L. assisted us, took us to sites, shared their evidence and graciously welcomed us to Monterrey. Dr. Greer, myself, a woman from New York and a man, also a videographer, from Minneapolis made up the CSETI team. (Names furnished upon request.)

Consciousness Connections:

Lucid dream activity played a significant role in the events that unfolded in Monterrey. Three of the team had dreams that proved to be portents of happenings on this project. I had a dream in the early hours of December 13th. In it, the extraterrestrials were showing us the spot where we should come in order to have a meeting with them. They showed me aerial views, in stop motion - each one closer to the ground - and marked the site with a strobing turquoise laser pattern. They showed me a view from the ground, looking up at some steep peaks, and showed it to me both in day and nighttime views. The night view revealed two stars in a particular configuration over one of the peaks.

That very afternoon, Santiago and his friends drove us to Las Mitres mountains, well known as an area of many sightings of UFOs. As we approached, it dawned on me that it was identical to what I was shown in my dream. We decided to use the spot as our field research site that night. When we came to Las Mitres (so named because the mountain peaks resemble a bishop's miter hat) that night, the two stars were indeed in the sky in the same position as I had seen in my lucid dream.

The Team Gets to Work:

The CSETI team had observed some anomalous objects in the sky at two different sites on the nights of December 11th and 12th, but the next two nights, the 13th and 14th at the Las Mitres sites, proved to be exceptional. The Las Mitres mountains contain a large cave where the local investigators believe that spacecraft conceal themselves when coming to the Monterrey area. And, unusually dense low clouds were known to form over the cave and other parts of the peaks very quickly. On the night of December 13th, the entire CSETI team set up camp at the base of Las Mitres. We were joined by an American woman who was a friend of one of our teammates, who was married to a Mexican man and living in Monterrey. She had arranged our lodging and transportation for us.

Around 10:30 pm, following our first Coherent Thought Sequencing (a CSETI protocol) session, we observed a very bright light that appeared in the zenith of the sky, traveling rapidly in an upward arc that terminated in the center of the constellationOrion. At 10:45 pm, very dense clouds materialized within a minute on parts of the sheer mountain cliffs.

The Close Encounters Begin:

At approximately 1:00 am, Dr. Greer and another team member were standing slightly down the gravel road when they observed a bright, strobe-like white light to appear at the edge of the mountain. At about the same time, I had gotten up and walked closer towards the brush at the base of the mountain. Dr. Greer looked for me to tell me of the strobe light and found me at the spot where it had appeared. As we stood there, another round light came rolling down the side of the steep slope. Just then, I felt some invisible energy that felt as if it were gently pulling me in deeper to the brush. Both Dr. Greer and I felt there was a presence nearby that, from past experience, led us to feel there was a spacecraft and extraterrestrial beings very nearby.

Just then, I began to perceive small, square-shouldered beings in the brush around us. They could be sensed and dimly seen, but a clear view of them wasn't possible. The little beings were extremely shy and reticent. They would scurry close to us, then backtrack quickly into the brush. We could not hear any brush moving or footsteps but we could dimly see them. To me, they seemed to have on uniforms that covered their body and legs that were a dull orange-rust color. They were very short, just up to my knees (I am 5'7"). I became aware of a telepathic message - they were concerned about our video camera, behind me to the right. I turned my head and looked. Sure enough, unknown to me previously as I had not seen it in the dark, was our teammate's professional camera set up on a tripod. I send back the mental message to them not to worry, the camera wasn't on and we wouldn't let him touch it. They seemed to trust my assurance, as the event continued to unfold. I related this two-way communication to Dr. Greer, who went back to the other three people and instructed them to stay where they were unless he called them forward.

These rich, rare exchanges with what appear to be extraterrestrial life forms are very delicate scenarios. Any sudden, rash or extreme emotion or movement can thwart the entire event and bring it to a screeching halt, and the extraterrestrials vanish. Sometimes our second-guessing of what is needed to allow an event to unfold in all its possible fullness is accurate; sometimes it is not. It is almost like hesitant dance partners, longing but afraid to get closer. Until we as a people are more accepting of close contact with extraterrestrials, our interactions are likely to continue in this way.

I could mentally 'hear' concerned conversation going on amongst the small beings. They eventually conveyed to me the message, again mentally, that they were having difficulty adjusting our energies in preparation for a meeting because my physical energy was concentrated on my stomach, trying to digest some food. Just before all this began, I had eaten about a half of a Power Bar, a dense protein energy food. It was cold and hard from being in my gear bag for hours and I could feel it kind of just laying in my stomach. At this point, I sent a very deliberate message to the life forms: "I give you permission to take it out of my body". Suddenly, I felt as if someone were standing some distance away with a fishing line whose hook was inside my stomach. It felt as if someone were slowing reeling in the line as the food came back out the way it went in. Now, I detest vomiting more than almost anything and I was struck by the gentleness that was used in removing this food from my body. It was only mildly unpleasant. Dr. Greer, an emergency physician, asked me if I was alright. I told him that I was fine and that this was being done with my permission. After this little purging, the energy felt softer, with less intense vibration.

Soon the little beings sent both Dr. Greer and I the message that if we removed our glasses, we would be able to see them better. Although I normally use contact lenses, glasses are preferable for field work when wind and dust often gets blown into my eyes, plus the fact that we are often in the field until the wee hours of the morning. After receiving this message, we each removed our glasses. One last request from the little ETs - that we remove our hats (it had been a chilly night.) At this point, I could actually feel a harmonious flow of energy between us, the little beings, and some other unseen source.

Another Being is Perceived:

At this point, the small life forms disappeared. Shafts of golden light began to come from an unknown, unseen source and lay across the bushes in front of us. We learned later that the three other team members behind us could see this as well, although they had not been able to perceive the small beings. I could feel one of these shafts of light approach me and fill my torso with a warm, golden glow. After the light rays faded, a large oval of bluish fog began to form about ten feet in front of us. As the blue mist began to coalesce, Dr. Greer and I became aware of a being within it. Although again we could see him only dimly, he appeared very humanoid, tall, with long and straight silverish hair. He appeared to be clothed in a light blue and silver uniform.

We learned later that one team member saw a tendril of the blue fog travel along the ground towards her. It frightened her a little until the mist reached her foot and began to send wisps around her feet. She later told us that there was a gentle kindness about the fog and all misgivings vanished. However, our American friend who was not an actual team member became very frightened by the golden light and blue fog.

We learned later that it was all too much for her - something the extraterrestrial would tell us. For as we stood there facing one another, the tall being sent us a message that they would very much like to manifest more fully in the physical to meet with us, but that if they did so, one of our team members would be dangerously frightened. Their caution and concern were touching. And a far cry from the crying wolf that goes on so often when extraterrestrials are said to be heartless, devoid of feeling, and out to harm human beings. We in CSETI feel that this type of encounter points up the absolute need and appropriateness of doing real-time field work in our efforts to learn exactly what these beings are all about.

It is important, and interesting, to note that both Dr. Greer and myself received nearly identical mental messages each time there was a communication from the extraterrestrial.

Dr. Greer and I consulted one another and decided to send a joint message. We told the tall being that if they could not come to us, it was okay with us if they could take us to where they were. We could sense this was being discussed with a 'central command control', or his more senior team members. Dr. Greer and I saw a copper-gold sphere, ten to twelve feet in diameter, begin to coalesce to the left of the tall being. It never reached material solidity but soon began to disperse. The tall being then sent us a message that it would frighten our teammates just as much to see us disappear in front of their eyes as it would for the ETs to manifest right there. At this time, we had no idea that any member of our team was having difficulty coping with these events.

Soon Again, Soon Again:

Finally, after what seemed like a few moments, the tall being sent us a message that they would not be able to manifest fully in the physical this night. But they sent a message: "soon again; soon again". At this point, Dr. Greer went back to speak with the other team members and I stayed put. For the next five minutes, the being and I exchanged blessings toeach other, to our teams. It was poignant and lovely. I cannot recall any of the actual 'words' or specific communications; it was not a left-brained exchange, but was beyond the bounds of linear thought.

Their Reluctance is Proven Out:

When I joined the others, I learned that our American friend had become extremely frightened, so much so that she had taken refuge in our vehicle. We had designated the big Suburban as the 'safe area". We do this on all our field research - setting aside a specific enclosure that any team member can go to if unfolding events prove fearful to them. In fact, it is our policy to send a 'buddy' along, who remains with them the entire time they wish to stay in the safe area. We divide into buddies at the beginning of our field session so that each team member is accounted for, and accountable, at all times. She told us that if she had seen anything more from the ETs, she would have run screaming down the mountainside.

Preparation is Key:

Her reactions impressed upon us the importance of training for each team member. It served as a strong reminder to us to be more stringent in adherence to our policies regarding untrained guests who wanted to join our field work.

Much to my surprise, Dr. Greer and I learned from our teammates that we had been standing there, exchanging communication with the extraterrestrials, for nearly two hours. We both thought no more than thirty minutes had elapsed. By this time, it was nearly 3:00 am, so we broke camp and went home.

The Encounters Continue:

The following day was a busy one with an appearance on Diana Chapa's live TV show in the morning, a field trip to another site in the afternoon, and a talk at the Ovni Club that evening. It was about 11:30 pm by the time we were driving up the narrow road to our Las Mitres site.

Interestingly, our videographer teammate was absent from field work. He had decided to stay in the city to visit his friend and her son. As the Suburban headed up the gravel lane, Dr. Greer and I simultaneously observed a small, bright light on the side of Las Mitres. We knew from the previous night that there was no light normally in that area. Tonight we also had with us our American friend's Mexican husband. He and our driver assured us there were no houses, no power lines, no roads, nothing on the sheer cliffs of Las Mitres.

As we came to the base of the mountain, Dr. Greer jumped from the Suburban while it was still rolling. The other woman and I jumped out and grabbed the bare necessities of field gear: a 500,000 candle power portable halogen light, our night vision scope, binoculars, a small camcorder, and a hand-held micro-cassette recorder.

Because of the reaction by an untrained participant the previous night, we sent our driver and his friend down the road. We told them we could not afford any panic this night. Unbeknownst to us at the time, the men went to a spot at the bottom of the road where they could clearly see the events that unfolded.

Are We in a Spielberg Movie?:

Dr. Greer grabbed the halogen light and sent a signal to the star-like light on the hillside. Instantly, the light transformed into a gigantic, brilliant round beam that shot light down the entire mountainside! We were astonished. It came close to being the time we always joke about - when events are so incredible that we'll wish we had on "Depends" undergarments! We continued to have a Close Encounter of the Fifth Kind - a human-initiated or human-interactive experience - with this craft for the next two hours and fifteen minutes. An exchange like this, with a team in the field, is unprecedented.

During the lengthy encounter, we sent light signals to the craft. The craft would signal back to us in the exact same sequence. Then its lights would extinguish. Within a few minutes, it would again illuminate and initiate a signal to us. This went on and on. Twice during this time period, we saw the shadows of beings walking in front of the blinding beam. At times, the beam would rotate upon itself, appearing to the left of its original position - then back where it was. Once the light seemed to turn over on itself, illuminating the sparsely forested slope behind it. This was one of the times when figures were seen to move in the beam.

Hoaxability Ration - Low to Zero:

It must be emphasized that this is a very remote area devoid of roads. For anyone to have hoaxed this event would have required something on the scale of a major motion picture crew. There was simply no way to have moved equipment like this onto these sheer slopes. It would have caused quite a commotion in the suburbs below if a crew of that magnitude had traversed those sheer cliffs that day. The area would have been swarming with lookie-loos.

At the end of the two hours and fifteen minutes, the light, which by now had split into two candle-flame colored round lights, turned to brilliant red, shot out a lightning bolt of energy and vanished. We saw a golden streak shoot through the sky towards the direction of the ancient volcano, Topochico. And the energy was gone. It was not until this point that we fully appreciated that

1) we'd been standing up for all that time, and
2) our hair had stood on end the entire time.

As a side note, I want to report that when we first got out of the vehicle at the base of the mountain, I heard crickets chirping in stereophonic synchronicity. One would chirp on our right, then one would chirp on our left. The chirping was loud and distinct. When I heard it, I told my teammates that it was significant. I had heard similar chirping prior to another major encounter in the past. It was moments later that the gigantic craft illuminated before us.

Eventful Trip Home:

We signalled to our drivers to bring up the Suburban. When they arrived, we learned that the men had gone to a vantage point and had seen everything, giving us two independent witnesses. In fact, from their extra distance the light was not so blinding and they were able to discern the craft. They both reported seeing a very large disc-shaped craft with a domed top. The men were extremely excited. They said they felt bonded now, like brothers. The American's husband said that his life would never be the same again.

As we were riding on our 30-minute drive home, Dr. Greer remarked that he felt the ETs would follow us. Within a minute, the man in front was exclaiming, "la luz, la luz!" (the light, the light!) We could then see that the gigantic light was visible from the road, showing itself to us on the opposite side of the mountain from where it had been at our field site! We stopped at a closed gas station, signalled and videoed (which came out fuzzy and blurred). You will recall that, of all nights, our videographer was not with us this night. Coincidence or orchestrated by the ETs? So many such things happen that we have to ponder the possibility. This time, the light was not appearing as two lights side by side. Instead, they were two lights stacked one on top the other. We continued to observe it on the remainder of the homeward ride, stopping twice more to observe.

When we arrived home, we climbed up to our flat roof. We could still see it, even though the entire valley of the city of Monterrey was now between us, the back side of Las Mitres and the rest of the range. The lights were still there. They had changed position again and were now staggered, one atop the other. They had been so bright that we could see the rock face behind it illuminated. As we watched, the lights dimmed down to about half their luminosity.

The Craft Revealed:

At this point, we could clearly see the structure of the craft. It was indeed a large disc with a sloped dome on top. By measuring with fingers at arm's length, Dr. Greer determined that the craft was between one-half to one full city block in size.

As the birds began to sing and the sky began to lighten, we bid goodbye and heartfelt thanks to our visitors for these remarkable experiences and went inside to sleep, and dream of them.

Final Notes: I wish to advise that the three persons who interacted with the craft as described above included three very responsible and stable individuals. Dr. Greer is a practicing trauma physician, father of four, world-renowned expert on extraterresrial intellignce. He is the founder of CSETI, and the visionary and guiding force of it. Our teammate from New York is cofounder of a research foundation, and is personal friends with world leaders in both the political and private sectors. And I myself have been educated in the sciences and the law and worked for many years as a paralegal, which gives me a logical mind upon which to base my ongoing extraterrestrial experiences.

I'm a amatuer photographer from Connecticut. One weekend I decided to drive up to Vermont for a day of picture taking. I was very excited because I heard that snow had just recently fell up in the mountains so I was hoping to get some good shots.

I finally got up to Vermont and just started to drive around aimlessly, hoping to find some good photo ops. Mid-afternoon(about 2-3 pm) I saw this great shot of some mountain with snow blowing all over the place on top of it. That day had about 20mph winds with higher gusts, as you can see in the picture. I parked the car on the side of the road, and stepped out, kneeled down and started to set up my camera to take the picture.

As I was setting up my camera, something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. It moved rather slowly, sort of like gliding, but not. It's very hard to explain because I have nothing to compare it to, it wasn't like anything I've seen before. It moved from the left to right in the picture(sorry, but I have no idea what the cardinal directions for that would be). The object looked as if it was having a little bit of trouble flying into the wind. After recovering from the awe in seeing this, I quickly took a picture. RIght after I took the picture it looked like the object stayed in the same sport for a second, and then it QUICKLY jolted all the way to right out of my view.

I have no idea what this object could have been, and now after viewing this site, I believe it may in fact have been a UFO. I hope this picture interests you as much as it intrests me.

Summary: A domed disc near cargo airliner, confirmed by the airplane's airborne radar. The object was disc-shaped with a transparent dome on top, and a silvery, highly polished surface. The object reacted to the sweep of the plane's radar. Pilots from the airliner saw two or three shadowy entities moving around inside the object.

Full Report

An airline DC-8 cargo flight was en route from St. Louis to Dallas on February 14, 1973, at about 2:30 a.m. At a point near McAlester, Oklahoma, the copilot noticed what he first thought was another aircraft just below the leading edge of the right wing about 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) away. The object was on the same course and speed, keeping a constant position. Only its steady amber light seemed unconventional.

Suddenly the object rose straight up like an elevator, made a sharp turn and approached the plane, taking up a position about 300 yards (270 meters) away and slightly above them. It was disc-shaped with a transparent dome on top, its silvery, highly polished surface reflecting the moonlight. Besides some stubby protrusions no other features were visible.

The captain switched on the weather radar and it confirmed that something real and solid was there. When the radar beam hit its surface, the object reacted immediately, ascending straight up, then moving sideways over the DC-8 and briefly out of sight. The object reappeared quickly, descending straight down and taking up a new position just below the leading edge of their left wing. It then dropped below and behind the plane, abruptly reappearing only about 300 feet (90 meters) below them.

Looking down into the dimly lit dome, the pilots saw two or three shadowy entities moving around. The object then darted out in front, performed various oscillatory motions and another sharp (noninertial) turn before speeding out of sight. It disappeared off the radar scope at a distance of 50 miles (80 km).16

Summary: In November, 1986, a Japanese crew of a jumbo freighter aircraft witnessed three unidentified objects while flying over Alaska, USA. This sighting gained international attention when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it was going to officially investigate this sighting because the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Anchorage, Alaska, had reported that the UFO had been detected on radar. The UFOs in this case were tracked on both ground and airborne radar, witnessed by experienced airline pilots, and confirmed by a FAA Division Chief.

Japan Air Lines Captain Kenju Terauchi describes the encounter with three UFOs over Alaska.

Capt. Terauchi's drawing of the huge object.

"Japan Air Lines Flight 1628"
Loy Lawhon

It was just a routine flight. Well, not exactly routine.... It was a special Japan Air Lines 747 cargo flight to carry a load of French wine from Paris to Tokyo. The flight plan would carry flight 1628 from Paris to Reykjavik, Iceland, across the North Atlantic and Greenland, then across Canada to Anchorage, Alaska, and finally across the Pacific to Tokyo. The crew consisted of veteran Captain Kenju Terauchi, co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji, and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba.

On November 16, 1986, laden with wine, JAL1628 took off from Paris and flew the first leg of the trip, to Reykjavik. The next day, they continued, flying over Greenland and then across northern Canada without event.

Just after they crossed into Alaska, at 5:09 PM local time, Anchorage Air Traffic Control contacted them on the radio to report initial radar contact. The Anchorage flight controller asked them to turn 15 degrees to the left and head for a point known as Talkeetna on a heading of 215 degrees. They were at 35,000 feet and traveling at a ground speed of about 600 mph.

At about 5:11 PM local time, Captain Terauchi noticed the lights of some sort of aircraft about 2000 feet below and 30 degrees to the left front of them. He decided that the aircraft was probably an American jet fighter from nearby Eielson or Elmendorf Air Force Bases patrolling Alaskan airspace, so he ignored them at first. However, after a few minutes, he noticed that the lights were keeping pace with his own aircraft, which would be an unusual thing for patrolling jets to do.

It was about seven or so minutes since we began paying attention to the lights (when), most unexpectedly, two spaceships stopped in front of our face, shooting off lights. The inside cockpit shined brightly and I felt warm in the face.

Terauchi said that it was his impression that the two objects he had seen below them minutes before had suddenly jumped in from of him. The craft, one above the other, kept pace with the 747 for several minutes, moving in unison with an odd rocking motion. After about seven minutes, they changed to a side-by-side arrangement. Terauchi said that the "amber and whitish" lights were like flames coming out of multiple rocket exhaust ports arranged in two rectangular rows on the craft. He felt that they fired in a particular sequence to stabilize the craft, much like the small maneuvering thrusters on the Space Shuttle. He also reported seeing sparks like a fire when using gasoline or carbon fuel.

Co-pilot Tamefuji described the lights as "Christmas assorted" lights with a "salmon" color. He said: I remember red or orange, and white landing light, just like a landing light. And weak green, ah, blinking. He also described the lights as pulsating slowly. They became stronger, became weaker., became stronger, became weaker, different from strobe lights. The lights were "swinging" in unison as if there were "very good formation flight...close" of two aircraft side by side. He described the appearance of the lights as similar to seeing "night flight head-on traffic", where it is only possible to see the lights on an approaching aircraft and "we can not see the total shape." He said, I'm sure I saw something. It was clear enough to make me believe that there was an oncoming aircraft.

Flight engineer Tsukuba, who sat behind the copilot, did not have as good a view of the lights. He first saw them "through the L1 window at the 11 o'clock position" and he saw "clusters of lights undulating". These clusters were "made of two parts...shaped like windows of an airplane". He emphasized that "the lights in front of us were different from town lights." He described the colors as white or amber.

Tamefuji decided to call Anchorage Air Traffic Control, and for the next thirty minutes the 747 and AARTCC were in constant contact regarding the UFO.

During this time, Captain Terauchi asked Tskububa to hand him a camera so that he could attempt to take a photograph of the lights. However, Terauchi was unfamiliar with the camera and could not get it to operate. Tsukuba also could not get his camera to operate due to problems with the auto-focus and finally gave up trying to take a photo.

At this point they began experiencing some radio interference and were asked by Anchorage to change frequencies. Terauchi later said that Anchorage kept asking him about clouds in the immediate area: They asked us several times if there were clouds near our altitude. We saw thin and spotty clouds near the mountain below us, no clouds in mid-to-upper air, and the air current was steady.

Soon after the exchanges about clouds, the objects flew off to the left. Terauchi said later: There was a pale white flat light in the direction where the ships flew away, moving in a line along with us, in the same direction and same speed and at the same altitude as we were.

Terauchi decided to see whether they could see anything on the 747's own radar:
I thought it would be impossible to find anything on an aircraft radar if a large ground radar did not show anything, but I judged the distance of the object visually and it was not very far. I set the digital weather radar distance to 20 (nautical) miles, radar angle to horizon (i.e., no depression angle). There it was on the screen. A large green and round object had appeared at 7 or 8 miles (13 km to 15 km) away, where the direction of the object was. We reported to Anchorage center that our radar caught the object within 7 or 8 miles in the 10 o'clock position. We asked them if they could catch it on ground radar but it did not seem they could catch it at all

At 5:25:45, after spending two minutes looking, the military radar at Elmendorf Regional Operational Control Center also picked up something. The ROCC radar controller reported back to the AARTCC that he was getting some "surge primary return." By this he meant an occasional radar echo unaccompanied by a transponder signal.

As the 747 neared Fairbanks:

The lights (of the city) were extremely bright to eyes that were used to the dark. (The cockpit lights had been turned off to eliminate window reflections of internal lights.) We were just above the bright city lights and we checked the pale white light behind us. Alas! There was a silhouette of a gigantic spaceship. We must run away quickly! "Anchorage Center. The JAL1628 is requesting a change of course to right 45 degrees." It felt like a long time before we received permission

Just after the plane turned to the right, the AARTCC controller called the Fairbanks Approach Radar controller to find out whether or not the short-range radar had a target near the JAL. The approach radar reported no target other than JAL1628.

The plane came out of the turn and flew toward Talkeetna at an altitude of 31,000 ft, with the object still following.

At about 5:40 a United Airlines passenger jet took off from Anchorage and headed north to Fairbanks. The AARTCC controller decided to ask the UA pilot to try to see the object that was following the JAL flight. The UA pilot said he would look when he got closer. The controller asked the JAL flight to stay at 31,000 ft and the UA flight to stay at 29,000 ft. He then directed the UA flight to turn some more so that the planes would pass within five miles of one another.

As the United Airlines jet got closer, the UFO apparently dropped behind, allowing the JAL plane to get far ahead. The United pilot asked the AARTCC to have the JAL pilot flash the headlights on the JAL aircraft so he could locate the plane. At 5:49:45 the JAL pilot did that. At this point the planes were about 25 miles apart.

When the planes were about 12 miles apart, the UA plane reported seeing the JAL plane and nothing else. But by this time the UFO had apparently disappeared, not being seen by JAL1628, either.

At about 5:51, the AARTCC requested that a military TOTEM flight in the area also fly toward the JAL plane for a look. During the next several minutes TOTEM viewed the JAL plane but couldn't see any other traffic. JAL1628 proceeded to Anchorage and landed at 6:20 PM.

The FAA conducted an investigation of the incident, and did not issue its final report until March 5. CSICOP's (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal)Phil Klass issued a premature statement on January 22 claiming that the UFOs were the planets Jupiter and Mars - an impossible solution because the UFO was seen in a part of the sky opposite the position of these planets and because the UFOs moved from positions one above the other to side by side. CSICOP later issued a second explanation that the UFO was light reflecting off of clouds of ice crystals - also unlikely because the sky was clear at the reported altitude of the UFO. The FAA attributed the radar images received by ground radar to a "split radar return from the JAL Boeing 747."

Summary: On the night of March 13, 1975, many sightings of bright aerial objects were made in the vicinity of Ashland, Wisconsin, which is located on Lake Superior. However, the most interesting of the reports comes from the Philip N. Baker family of Mellen, Wisconsin, some 20 miles south of Ashland.

Full Report

On the night of March 13, 1975, many sightings of bright aerial objects were made in the vicinity of Ashland, Wisconsin, which is located on Lake Superior. Our investigation indicates that several policemen observed airborne objects which they could not identify, but not much more than the "flying light" variety.

However, the most interesting of the reports comes from the Philip N. Baker family of Mellen, Wisconsin, some 20 miles south of Ashland. Fifteen-year-old Jane Baker had gone outside to take the cats to the garage where they are housed for the night, and was just at the garage door when she heard "strange high-toned noises." She turned around and looked up at the hill to the north and saw an object apparently sitting on the road into Mellen. The whole hill was lit up, she said. She described it as a silvery disc-shaped object with a domed top which gave off a yellowish-white glow. Around its midsection were located red and green lights which were flashing on and off (see accompanying drawing).

Jane put the cats in the garage and went back into the house to get her father, who was sitting on the couch with his shoes off, watching television. The family is certain of the time because the "Harry-O" show had just started. Jane told her father that "there was a thing on the hill up the road." Mr. Phillips put on his shoes and they both went outside to look at it. At this point the glow was subsiding and the flashing lights had also turned out, and the noise was gone also. However, there was a square lighted area in the middle of it (see inset drawing in Lance Johnson's composite). This area, which appeared to be an opening, had the same yellow-white glow that the top of the object had had earlier when Jane viewed it alone.

The two then walked to position three and at this time noticed a metal-on-metal banging sound. They then went back into the house where Mr. Phillips put in a telephone call to the Undersheriff. While he was talking on the phone they heard a loud boom and when Jane looked out the window the object was gone.

During this period of time, the object was pointed out to Mrs. Phillips, who viewed it from a window in the house, and three other members of the family, 11-year-old Jeff, 12-year-old John and 16-year-old Montgomery also got a look at the object.

The next morning, Jane went outside to see if she could find any traces from the previous night. She looked over toward the swamp near her home and saw the same or a similar object again — only this time there were no flashing lights or glow — but the shape and color were the same. It was hovering over some evergreen trees. Jane went back into the house to put on heavier clothing, then went back out, taking the family dog with her. She was proceeding toward the evergreens when the dog gave a big yelp and started to whine and paw at her ears. Then the dog became completely still. Jane says she didn't hear anything, but carried the dog into the house. When she came back out again, the object was gone.

Later in the morning she and Monty and John walked to the spot where the object had been seen the night before. They noted that there was a round area on the road where the snow was "fluffed up." There were tire tracks over the area where a car had passed after the object had left, but there were also bicycle tracks leading up to it, then taking up again on the other side. These were tracks made by one of the boys riding his bicycle the morning before. The "fluffed up" area apparently obliterated parts of the bicycle tracks.

The condition of the snow is a new phenomenon where UFO landings are concerned. We can hypothesize that it was a result of the propulsion system of the UFO but it could also have been a deliberate attempt to cover any tracks made by whoever or whatever was making the banging noise.

All of the Phillips family agree that the object was on the ground for a total of no less than 10 minutes. The investigation of that particular night is ongoing because there seems to be more witnesses in the area who have yet to be interviewed and there may be corroborating witnesses in other homes in the area.

Summary: Felt humming vibration that woke my brother and I up. We both looked out our bedroom window and saw a large bright silver/white saucer shaped craft pass very low over our south soy bean field. Object was as large as this 25 acre field.

Full Report

I was approximately 12 to 13 years old, living in rural Ohio. We lived on a 101 acre farm, surrounded by other larger and smaller farms. We raised soy beans. My brother and I shared one the 2nd story bedrooms, which had a window facing south overlooking a 25 acre soy bean field.

One night my brother awakened me and asked if I felt an odd humming sensation, which I did. Then we both saw light appearing outside of our window. We both jumped up and ran to the window. We both saw a large saucer shaped craft, It covered the entire 25 acre field, was going from West to East very slowly (approx. speed 10-15 miles per hour) It's altitude was approximately 15-20 feet over our field. From our vantage point on the 2nd story we saw a side view of this craft (it was approx the size or height of our 2 story house) This craft was very bright luminous silver/white in color. The south field was about 50-60 feet from our house. At the most, this craft was approximately, 100-150 feet from us. We could see what appeared to be portals with creatures that appeared to be facing and staring at us. The craft slowly covered the distance of this South field and then when it started going over our 2nd 25 acre field directly East, it accelerated at an extremely hight rate of speed, going at a 40 degree angle. At which time we could see the perfectly round shape of this craft as it accelerated to a very high altitude (it appeared no biger than a bright star). It then did a 150 degree reversal, then a 70 degree angle towards our back fields. All of this accelerated activity taking no more than 1-2 seconds!! We woke our parents up and they found this very hard to believe telling us to get to bed so that we could get up for school.

The next day they had reports all over the place about this low flying object. On TV, Radio and the newspapers. Some lover lane couples in Milford, Ohio said that it was flying so low that it broke tree branches.

Within 3 days of this incident, an officer from Project Blue Book came to our farm and wanted to interview us. Our parents refused. He told them that our neighbors directly east of us reported this same craft and said that it had landed in their back field, just directly East of our last field. When we went back there that same day there was a large, circular depression, that appeared to be slightly burnt and covered almost the entire 25 acre field. Many people were there, some taking pictures.

What I find odd about this incident, is that young teenage boys would just go back to bed and immediately go to sleep?? After just seeing a UFO??

Also, I have not been able to find any other information on these sightings?? If you read this and know of this sighting, please report it here.

Full Report

McMinnville, Oregon - May 11, 1950: Two of the most notorious UFO photos of all time were taken on a farm near Mcminnville by a farmer named Paul A. Trent. Beyond many such cases, these two photos have withstood the test of time--through generations of researchers. It could be said that this case specified the boiling point for the heated ongoing debate over what qualifies as physical evidence--at least when it comes to the subject of UFOs.

Mrs. Trent was outside getting finished feeding her rabbits, when she noticed the large, disc-shaped object approaching from the northeast. She called out to Mr. Trent who joined her to look at the mystery device. After a few moments, he went back in the house to get his camera. He got back out and picked a spot to stand and took the first picture, then wound the film for the next picture. (That was typically a time consuming process with a 1950 box camera.) Several minutes later, he took the other.

In the meantime, Mrs. Trent called out to her in-laws on their porch, about 400 feet away. They didn't hear her, so she ran into the house to call them on the telephone. Mrs. Trent's mother-in-law didn't get to see it because it disappeared by the time she was off of the phone, but Mrs. Trent's father-in-law did catch a glimpse of it just before it disappeared in the west.

Mr. Trent waited to finish the roll of film before he got the pictures developed. They were displayed nearly a month later in a local bank. (The Trents' banker worked there.) A reporter named Powell, who worked for the McMinnville Telephone Register, saw the photos and convinced the Trents to let him publish their story and photographs. However, it did take a bit of coaxing because the Trent's feared they might get in some kind of trouble with the government.

The photographs and story wound up in the June 26, 1950 issue of Life, who borrowed the negatives from Powell. The Trents didn't get the negatives back for another 17 years. They were requested for examination by the Condon investigation in the late 1960's, and after that analysis was done, they were finally sent back to Mr. Trent.

The first people to examine the negatives found no signs of manipulation of the negative and no visible means of support for the UFO pictured, and so it has remained, for over half a century. No scientific study of this case has ever revealed anything that contradicts the witnesses or their fortunate photos. (NURMUFO)

Day/Night: Daytime

Reported: 10/11/2005 3:07:53 AM

Location:  Victor, Montana, United States

Urban or Rural: Urban, populated. Nothing special here except a lot of cows and horses. Mountainous area, but the bitterroot is a large valley between two mountain ranges

Type of Report:

Hynek Classification:

Duration: 10 Seconds

No. of Object(s):

Size of Object(s): Approx. 40 feet in diameter and 5 to 7 feet high. About the size of a dime as it popped up on its side. Both were the same size.

Distance to Object(s):

Shape of Object(s):

Color of Object(s): Silver metallic in color, very shiny and disk shaped.

Number of Witnesses: 1+

Special Features/Characteristics:  When they didn't sway back and forth you could only see a thin dark outline that looked like a thin object in the distance. If you took a large piece of thick metal and threw it like a frisbee, that is pretty much how you can describe the object, thin when level and round when it was on its side. However, these objects didn't come down and flew in formation.

Summary: Two silver disk ships (approx. 40 feet in diameter and about 5000 feet off the ground) flew East to West over the Bitterroot Valley Moving slowly following each other on a clear sunny day.

Full Report

While driving home with a load on my truck on highway 93 going south from Stevensville about 3:50 p.m. I noticed something flashing in the sky and as I watched (while trying to stay on the road) I noticed two objects I thought were planes for a second moving East to West over the Bitterroot Valley near Bear Creek (Victor area) until a second later they both swayed back and forth and the following disk popped up on its side to reveal a shiny metallic surface that reflected the sun, not as bright like a mirror, but reflecting enough sunlight with a bright blue grey reflection (like cobalt metal with a bright light shined on it is exactly what it looked like) that came from the whole area of the craft. It was on its side for about 2 seconds as it still moved forward following the other. That is when I saw it was a disk shaped and that it was not an airplane. When they were level they were more of a thin dark line in the sky with no shiny reflection from their sides (that I could see anyway from my angle).

They were moving at about 150 miles per hour (about the same speed as a small airplane or a little faster in the last few seconds I saw them go into the valley.)

The day was clear and sunny, not a cloud in sight.

The whole sighting lasted about 10 seconds since I only caught the last part of them before they entered the mountains, but while I was watching them a few other drivers were also pulling their cars over and looking up at the sky . I am sure with such a large object and its shiny surface many others in the bitterroot valley saw the same thing if they happened to be paying attention.

This UFO photograph was featured on CNN Headline News.

Below is the Associated Press news article, describing this photograph:

'Utah: Photo Librarian Captures UFO on Film'

Associated Press / The Daily Herald (Utah) - 5/21/2004
Alexandria Sage THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SALT LAKE CITY -- To the naked eye, Tommy Woodard's digital photograph appears to be nothing more than a pretty picture of trees in Provo Canyon.

But zoom in, he says, and the purple glow of a saucer hovering at an angle above the tree line starts to take shape.

Woodard, 22, a photo librarian with the Utah Film Commission, took the photo that he believes represents an unidentified flying object.

He was in the canyon Tuesday shooting still pictures for a possible film location, and began taking pictures for himself on his way out.

At the time, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary in his photograph. But later, after noticing a black speck in the frame, he zoomed in and "the closer I got, the more impressed I got by it," he said Thursday.

"I was kind of skeptical but it's pretty obvious when you zoom in," said the self-described "sci-fi" fan, whose friends and colleagues are similarly impressed.

Woodard said he's a "believer" because the recent photograph is not his first encounter with mysterious flying objects. Once, playing baseball at the age of 10, he saw three blurry gray spheres rotating in the sky. Within a moment, they were gone.

Woodard contacted officials at Hill Air Force Base to ask if any planes were flying in the canyon area Tuesday but hasn't heard back yet. "They kind of laughed, you know," he said.

Hill Air Force Base spokeswoman Lt. Caroline Wellman told The Associated Press on Thursday she is awaiting response from the 388th Fighter Wing whether any of their F-16 jets were above Provo Canyon Tuesday.

Another skeptical reaction to the digital photograph came from a representative of the National UFO Reporting Center in Seattle -- he said thought the sphere looked like a bird.

"A bird?" asked Woodard in disbelief. "Come on -- I don't know how he could think it's a bird!"

Woodard discounted the theory that the image could be nothing more than a speck of dust on his film. Of the hundred photos he shot Tuesday, none contained a similar mark, he said.

The Provo Canyon photograph is not the first reported UFO sighting this year to immediately get debunkers.

In March, the Mexican air force captured images of bright blurs in the sky using infrared equipment. The videotape aired on television for the first time last week, with one scientist saying the objects could have been caused by gases in the atmosphere.

Summary: This was a saucer type "ship" with multi colored lights on the edge that landed in the back yard after appearing behind some trees 20 yards behind the house. I woke up in my girlfriend an my bedroom on the second floor, looked out the window and saw the lights.

Full Report

At first I didn't wake her up but I could see the lights behind the trees which then rose above the trees and hovered in the air for a moment. I could "hear" a message in my thoughts that my desire for proof of extraterrestrials had arrived and that I was not to tell anyone. It was definitely telepathic communication and I asked silently if I could tell my woman and the reply was something like "If you want to." So I woke her up and asked her to look out the window and tell me what she could see. She described exactly what I saw and then I made sure I wasn't dreaming by several different methods(shaking my head, pinching myself, asking her if we were dreaming,etc.). I then asked her if she could "hear" the message coming mentally from the ship which by this time was landing very close to the house. She said, "It's telling us not to tell anyone and that we can come onto the ship." That's what I was perceiving also, so I jumped out of bed and started putting my clothes on as she put her robe on. I was out in the upstairs hall and headed down the stairs to the back door of the house when I heard her say she HAD to tell our roommate who was sleeping in her room. I said don't do it as I shot down to the first floor and out to the back yard. I saw the ship sitting there and there was an open door with a ramp coming out of it. Meanwhile my girl friend and roommate were headed downstairs but I was intent on getting onto the vehicle and not violating the beings who had sent the thoughts by telling more people. There was a yellowish light coming from the interior and I could see a tiled wall and what appeared to be a tube filled with liquid at the center of the room. The next thing I remembered was standing back in the house near the back door. I rushed back outside and the UFO was lifting off into the air above the yard. The women were entering the room from the upstairs by this time and they joined me outside. As I looked up following its movement high into the air(about 150 ft.) the object transformed itself into what appeared to be a U.S. Army Cargo plane, complete with a rumbling engine sound and proceeded away above the trees. Our roommate said something to the effect that it was just a plane, and I could feel waves of mental energy attempting to block and confuse my mind into a doubtful state. As we stood there in the yard I resolved not to let my memory be blanked out. We all ended up going back to bed and the next day my girlfriend said the whole thing was probably in our minds somehow, but I know it was physical/material/real time expereince because I ran onto that ship with my jeans and a t-shirt on and had only underpants on when I found myself back in the house minutes or hours later. What happened inside the ship I cannot recall but remember running up that ramp.

THINK ABOUTIT SIGHTINGS REPORT

Date: October, 1951

Reported:

Location: Nellis Air Force Base, Yucca Flat, Nevada, United States

Type of Case/Report: StandardCase

Hynek Classification: DD (Daylight Discs)

Duration: 10-15 mins

Shape of Object(s): Disc

Number of Witnesses: 2

Special Features/Characteristics: Military, Nuclear Facility

Source: NICAP, Walter Webb Source

Summary: Formation of 18 silvery, rotating, disc-shaped objects, each one with a dome, come down over a nuclear test site, hover for 10 to 15 minutes, and then depart, at an angle, vanishing out of sight in seconds.

Full Report

This sighting; if true, may be unprecedented. It is unusual because of the large number of UFOs reportedly observed at one time in combination with the supersensitive location and timing of the event. On November 18,1964, I happened to be investigating a Boston newspaper story which found me prowling around a West Quincy (Boston suburb), Massachusetts, cemetery in search of some sort of weird nocturnal creature (see my; NICAP report, " 'The Watermelon Caper.'--November 13-14, 1964"). Although I later concluded the Little beast WAS probably an owl or other known animal, the uncle of the initial witness told me, during the course of the investigation, that he had sighted, UFOs in Nevada when he was in the service.

I wrote the following at the end of my 1964 report: "He (I'll call him "Mr. M.") thought the observation might have been made in 1951. He was with a group of servicemen at Yucca Flat and just before a nuclear test was due to go off, they all saw a formation of 18 silvery, rotating, disc-shaped objects, each one with a dome, come down over the test site, hover for 10 to 15 minutes, and then depart, at an angle, vanishing out of sight in seconds."

At the time I was concentrating upon the investigation at hand and was more interested in securing details from Mr. M. about the creature seen by him and the. .neighborhood kids- in the cemetery. Moreover, I was somewhat skeptical about his story of a UFO armada.

UFOCAT Strangeness Class--Type 3 (UFO in trajectory with .single discontinuity)
Vallee Class--Type III-B (UFO halts in flight and hovers before resuming motion)

Recently I opened my "sightings pending" folder and attempted to contact some of the witnesses in cases that were never followed up for a number of reasons. One of these individuals was Mr. M.. Although 16 years had elapsed since my interview with him, I discovered that he still resided at the same apartment house but in a different apartment. I telephoned him on February 28, 1981, and re-introduced myself. However, he seemed reluctant to discuss the 1951 episode and, in fact, politely refused to grant a face-to-face interview. As I drew him out, it appeared he received such ridicule from the police and others during the '64 incident that he understandably shied away from any future involvements of a similar nature. I assured him that his name would be kept confidential, that it was important such UFO sightings become part of the written record, that I had interviewed many others, and, in fact, was at UFO eyewitness myself. He seemed to loosen a bit although he still declined to see me in person. And so I began asking questions over the telephone. Under the circumstances, I felt very fortunate to have been able to extract the following account from Mr. M.

THE SIGHTING

In 1951 Mr. M. was an Air Force corporal stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada. That same year the Atomic Energy Commission established the  Nevada Test Site  and began detonating nuclear devices at Yucca Flat (about 120 kilometers, or .75 miles, northwest of the base). He recalled that during one of the first tests --- perhaps the second or third in a series of seven--he was among those at Nellis who volunteered for sentry duty at the perimeter of the AEC site. When asked if he could pin down the date, he said  "October sticks in my mind" although he couldn't be absolutely certain. The time of the sighting was early morning after sunrise and occurred perhaps 15 or 20 minutes before the detonation.

Armed with these clues, I called the Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and spoke to Paul Walker. I had already learned there were 12 nuclear tests in Nevada during 1951 and now wanted to know the dates, times, and code names of each of the tests. Walker not only had that information but also the height of the burst and the yield. His source was the book, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, edited by Samuel Glasstone and published jointly .by the Department of Defense and the AEC in April, 1962.. There were two series of tests in Nevada during 1951. The first one was called Operation Ranger and consisted of five detonations in. January and February. The final seven-shot sequence. was Operation, Buster-Jangle in October and November. Three of those tests---Shots Able, Baker, and Charlie--occurred, respectively, on October 22 at 6:00 a.m. PST; the 28th at 7:20 a.m.;. and the 30th at 7:00 a.m. Able was a small tower burst at 30 meters (100 feet), yielding less than 0.1 kiloton. Baker and Charlie .were air-drops, exploding at 341 and 345 meters (1118 and 1132 feet) above the desert floor with a force of 3.5 and 14 kilotons, respectively. Able was ruled out immediately since the UFO sighting would have had to take place 10 or 15 minutes before sunrise. When I reached Mr. M again on March 5, I asked him if he. could remember how soon after sunrise his UFO observation had happened. He replied that it must have been a half hour or so. Both Baker and Charlie qualified. When I asked the witness about the size of the explosion, he recalled it was between 10 and 20 kilotons. This narrowed down the date to October 30. (Local sunrise on that date, 6:00.)

Mr. M., who was 19 years old at the time (on November 3), thought his post was several kilometers--perhaps five to six (three to four miles)--east of Ground Zero, which would place the sun at his back. Suddenly, as he glanced at the clear sky in front of him, he perceived three silvery, elliptical. objects hovering in the direction of the. target zone and at an estimated height of up to 600 meters (a few thousand feet). Time: approximately 6:40-45, as determined by the known time of the detonation 15 to .20 minutes later. Each object possessed a flat bottom and a dome on top. No other features were visible. The UFOs were arranged in a horizontal triangle, with one object positioned in. front toward the observer and the others in back to either side. The analogy Mr. M. used was "like looking down a bowling alley at ten-pins." The UFOs were shiny and reflected the early morning sunlight. No sound could be detected from that distance.

The prime witness and another guard, who also saw the objects, turned to get the attention of the Corporal of the Guard. When the latter arrived, Mr. M. noticed an armada of other discs had joined the original trio. They were all arranged in about six groups of three stretched out in a horizontal row. Apparently, none of the three witnesses saw the huge formation arrive. Mr. M. remembers he had time to count a total of 18 discs.

"After perhaps "30 seconds to a minute" (total observation time), the entire UFO formation abruptly departed upward at an angle and. vanished in seconds. The Corporal of the Guard said something like "if we're smart, we; won't say anything about this." Mr. M. never heard any mention of the sighting again. No conventional aircraft appeared on the scene to pursue the UFOs since aircraft weren't permitted over the test area (he doesn't recall seeing or hearing the aircraft that dropped the nuclear device 15 to 20 minutes later).. However, the witness believes the UFOs' presence undoubtedly was recorded somewhere. The objects themselves, he feels, must have been monitoring the test .He hinted that, as a consequence of his sighting, he believes UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin.

When I told Mr. M. that in 1964 he said the discs rotated and hovered for 10 to 15 minutes, he answered by saying he didn't recall any rotation and the objects definitely weren't visible that long. (Of course, it has been 16 years since he talked with me and 30 years since the sighting itself. Perhaps the longer time actually was a reference to the interval between the sighting and the nuclear detonation.)

During my March 5 telephone call, I asked the witness if he might attempt to estimate each UFO's apparent size and angular elevation. Of course, it was understood such estimates made 30 years after the fact would be so uncertain as to be almost useless. Farther, the observer was unable to visualize the arm's-length size comparison (he kept coming up with a 12- inch rule or pie plate, which would make the UFOs enormous). If the objects were five to six kilometers distant and 600 meters up, the .35-degree elevation value offered by the witness should be reduced to less than 10-degrees. If, on the other hand, the original elevation figure is in the right ballpark, then  the objects .were actually much higher--say, 3000 to '4600 meters (10.000 to 15,000 feet) at he same distance. It seems to me that in order for the domed shapes to have been visible, it is quite possible the UFOs were closer to the witness. In such case, the witness's initial angle estimate would again be in the right ballpark. The fact of the matter is that juggling the above figures is a rather useless exercise at this point in time.

I asked Mr. M. if he would mail a sketch of the UFOs and their formation, but he declined. Therefore, the drawings that accompany this report are the investigator's own interpretation based upon close questioning of the witness on the telephone.

MASS FLIGHTS OP UFO'S

In an effort to determine just how prevalent such mass UFO flights are, I conducted a cursory survey of some of the literature, especially Ted Bloecher's on the UFO Wave of 1947 (private printing, 1967). During the June, 1947 peak period covered by the Bloecher study, I found 16 sighting reports alone that referred to UFO formations numbering 18 or more. An unknown portion of. these probably have mundane explanations such as flocks of high-flying birds, airborne seed fibers (milkweed, cottonwood), spider gossamer, and clusters of balloons. One group of 50 to 60 night-flying discs (Case #554) 'was even accompanied by the suspicious sound of "goose-like honking": Nevertheless, there appeared to be a number of fairly reliable observations in the Bloecher collection describing UFO fleets composed of Mr. M.'s total or more, as follows: 18, 19, 20, 21, 20-30, two dozen (three :reports), 25..25-30, and 30. Groups of three discs in geometrical formation weren't uncommon in the '47 survey.

One of the most detailed and reliable accounts of a mass flight I happened to come across was investigated by APRO Consultant (psychology) R. Leo Sprinkle. It. was reported in The APRO Bulletin, December, 1975. On September 24, 1974, at. Rock Lake in Wyoming, a. pair of fishermen witnessed the flyover of approximately 35 silvery discs arrayed in an oval formation which emitted a droning noise like a beehive. At the end of the sighting, the objects began to climb at a steep angle and the sound ceased at that point. Then they accelerated rapidly out of sight.

On occasion such items as radar chaff discharged from military aircraft and exploding balloons account for some mass-flight sightings. The famous "saucer invasion" of Farmington, New Mexico, on March 17, 1950, proved quite literally to be a bust: Many of the town's citizens asserted they watched hundreds of discs--from 500 to "thousands" -- cavorting in the sky. Blue Book chief Ed Ruppelt in The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects (Doubleday, 1956), explained that a  skyhook balloon burst near Farmington on the 17th, and the drifting pieces sparkling in the sunlight at very high altitude probably were responsible for the local flap.

EVALUATION

When I first heard Mr. M''s story 16 years ago, I must admit I was dubious. His hesitation in 1981 to allow a face-to-face interview is, in my judgment, satisfactorily explained by the official ridicule he suffered during the '64 episode. I would describe the witness as "reluctantly cooperative." During our telephone conversations, I was impressed by a number of things. Without any prompting from me, Mr. M. immediately referred to "18" as the number of UFOs he claimed he had seen during the '51 sighting--the precise figure he gave me 16 years ago. And, as stated elsewhere in this report, such an armada of UFOs is, by no means, a rarity.

The witness had more than simply a passing knowledge of events at the AEC Nevada Test. site in 1951. I was able to eventually pin down the date of the experience using the information he recalled and checked against known dates, times, etc., for the nuclear tests that year. He correctly identified the total number of tests in the fall series of nuclear tests (seven) the test he attended (second or third in the series), the month of his sighting (October), the time (half hour or so after sunrise and 15 or 20 minutes before the detonation), and yield of the test (between 10 and 20 kilotons). This last bit of in formation was enough to permit selection of the final date since the October 30 test was the only one in the entire series that fit within the bracketed lower and upper limits given by the witness; other yields were either much lower or much higher. Thus, while this doesn't necessarily prove Mr. M. had a UFO sighting, it does go a long way toward establishing that he was present at the atomic test site when he said he was.

The appearance and behavior of the UFOs described rule out conventional objects such as aircraft, helicopters, blimps, and balloons. In addition, no such objects would have been permitted over the test site just before the detonation-- especially a mass flight!

Thirty years have elapsed since Mr. M.'s observation, and until now he has never reported it officially to anyone. I tend to accept his account of what he said, happened in Nevada on that October morning in 1951. Therefore, I believe this sighting should be classified as an unknown.

Full Report

Artist depiction of incident.

Another one of the famous airline sightings of earlier years is the Chiles-Whitted Eastern Airlines case (Refs. 3, 5, G , 10, 23, 24, 25, 26). An Eastern DC-3, en route from Houston to Atlanta, was flying at an altitude of about 5,000 ft.. near Montgomery at 2 :45 a.m. The pilot, Capt. Clarence S. Chiles, and the co-pilot, John B. Whitted, both of whom now fly jets for Eastern, were experienced fliers (for example, Chiles then had 8500 hours in the air, and both had wartime military flying duty behind them.). I interviewed both Chiles and Whitted earlier this year to crosscheck the many points of interests in this case. Space precludes a full account of all relevant details.

Chiles pointed out to me that they first saw the object coming out of a distant squall line area which they were just reconnoitering. At first, they thought it was a jet, whose exhaust was somehow accounting for the advancing glow that had first caught their eyes. Coming almost directly at them at nearly their flight altitude, it passed off their starboard wing at a distance on which the two men could not closely agree: one felt it was under 1000 ft., the other put it at several times that. But both agreed, then and in my 1968 interview, that the object was some kind of vehicle. They saw no wings or empennage, but both were struck by a pair of rows of windows or some apparent openings from which there came a bright glow "like burning magnesium." The object had a pointed "nose", and from the nose to the rear along its underside there was a bluish glow. Out of the rear end came an orange-red exhaust or wake that extended back by about the same distance as the object's length. The two men agreed that its size approximated that of a B-29, though perhaps twice as thick. Their uncertainty as to true distance, of course, renders this only a rough impression. There is uncertainty in the record, and in their respective recollections, as to whether their DC-3 was rocked by something like a wake. Perception of such an effect would have been masked by Chiles' spontaneous reaction of turning the DC-3 off to the left as the object came in on their right. Both saw it pass aft of them and do an abrupt pull-up; but only Whitted, on the right side, saw the terminal phase in which the object disappeared after a short but fast vertical ascent. By "disappeared", Whitted made clear to me that he meant just that; earlier interrogations evidently construed this to mean "disappeared aloft" or into the broken cloud deck that lay above them. Whitted said that was not so; the object vanished instantaneously after its sharp pull-up. (This is not an isolated instance of abrupt disappearance. Obviously I cannot account for such cases.)

Discussion. This case has been the subject of much comment over the years, and rightly so. Menzel (Ref. 24) first proposed that this was a "mirage", but gave no basis for such an unreasonable interpretation. The large azimuth-change of the pilots' line of sight, the lack of any obvious light source to provide a basis for the rather detailed structure of what was seen, the sharp pull-up, and the high flight altitude involved all argue quite strongly against such a casual disposition of the case. In his second book, Menzel (Ref. 25) shifts to the explanation that they had obviously seen a meteor. A horizontally-moving fireball under a cloud-deck, at 5000 ft., exhibiting two rows of lights construed by experienced pilots as ports, and finally executing a most non-ballistic 90-degree sharp pull-up, is a strange fireball indeed. Menzels 1963 explanation is even more objectionable, in that he implies, via a page of side-discussion, that the Eastern pilots had seen a fireball from the Delta Aquarid meteor stream. As I have pointed out elsewhere (Ref. 2), the radiant of that stream was well over 90-degrees away from the origin point of the unknown object. Also, bright fireballs are, with only rare exceptions, not typical of meteor streams. The official explanation was shifted recently from "Unidentified" to "Meteor", following publication of Menzel's 1963 discussion (see Ref. 20, p.88).

Chile's drawing

Whitted's drawing

Chiles-Whitted Drawings

Wingless, cigar-shaped or "rocket-shaped" objects, some emitting glowing wakes, have been reported by other witnesses. Thus, Air Force Capt. Jack Puckett, flying near 4000 ft. over Tampa in a C-47 on August 1, 1946 (Ref. 10, p.23), described seeing "a long, cylindrical shape approximately twice the size of a B-29 with luminous portholes", from the aft end of which there came a stream of fire as it flew near his aircraft. Puckett states that he, his copilot, Lt. H. F. Glass, and the flight engineer also saw it as it came in to within an estimated 1000 yards before veering off. Another somewhat similar airborne sighting, made in January 22, 1956 by TWA Flight Engineer Robert Mueller at night over New Orleans, is on record (Ref. 27). Still another similar sighting is the AAL case cited below (Sperry case). Again, over Truk Is., in the Pacific, a Feb. 6, 1953, mid-day sighting by a weather officer involved a bullet-shaped object without wings or tail (Ref. 7, Rept. No.10). Finally, within an hour's time of the Chiles-Whitted sighting, Air Force ground personnel at Robins AFB, Georgia, saw a rocket-like object shoot overhead in a westerly direction (Refs. 3, 5, 10, 6). In none of these instances does a meteorological or astronomical explanation suffice to explain the sightings.

Summary: U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. (D-GA), then chairman of the Armed Services Committee, was on a Soviet train when he spotted a disc-shaped craft taking off near the tracks. He hurriedly called his military aide and interpreter to the window and they saw the UFO, plus another one that appeared a minute later.

Full Report

One of the most powerful U.S. senators in modern history actually eye-witnessed two UFO’s while on a fact-finding trip through Russia in 1955, and the U.S. government kept the sightings a secret for more than three decades. The incredible encounter is detailed in 12 TOP SECRET CIA, FBI, and Air Force reports, and declassified in 1985. Those startling reports reveal that Senator Richard B. The astonished trio reported the sightings to the U.S. Air Force as soon as they were out of Russia.

The Air Force Intelligence report says Russell and his two traveling companions spotted the UFOs on October 4, 1955, while traveling by rail across Russia’s Transcaucasus region. "One disc ascended almost vertically, at a relatively slow speed, with its outer surface revolving slowly to the right, to an altitude of about 6000 feet, where its speed then increased sharply as it headed north," the report states. "The second flying disc was seen performing the same actions about one minute later. The take-off area was about 1-2 miles south of the rail line."

DECLASSIFIED SECRETS REPORTS OF THE EVENT:

"The three observers were firmly convinced that they saw a genuine flying disc," says an Air Force Intelligence report, dated October 14, 1955, and classified TOP SECRET at the time. Senator Russell served 38 years in the Senate. He was its senior, and one of the most influential, senators at the time of his death in 1971. He was chairman of the Armed Services Committee from 1951 to 1969, and unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1952. The mind-boggling documents detailing his UFO encounter were made available by the Fund for UFO Research and its chaiman, Dr. Bruce Maccabee. Several key documents were obtained by the group through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). "These long secret documents are of major importance because they show for the first time that one of the most powerful U.S. Senators witnessed and reported a UFO," said Dr. Maccabee.

Russell "saw the first flying disc ascend and pass over the train," and went "rushing in to get Mr Efron (Ruben Efron, his interpreter) and Col. Hathaway (Col. E. U. Hathaway, his aide) to see it," the report said. "Col. Hathaway stated that he got to the window with the Senator in time to see the first (UFO), while Mr. Efron said that he got only a short glimpse of the first. However, all three saw the second disc and all agreed that they saw the same round, disc-shaped craft as the first." The Air Force report was written by Lieut. Col. Thomas Ryan, who interviewed Senator Russell’s companions in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on October 13, after they arrived there from Russia shortly after the sighting.

In his report, Col. Ryan called the sightings "an eyewitness account of the ascent and flight of an unconventional craft by three highly reliable United States observers. He added that Col. Hathaway led off his account of the sightings by saying: "I doubt if your going to believe this, but we all saw it. Senator Russell was the first to see this flying disc we’ve been told for years that there isn’t such a thing, but all of us saw it."

CIA documents show that the agency later interviewed the three eyewitnesses in the Russell party, and also a fourth person, unidentified in the reports, who had seen the UFO’s. An eyewitness, whose name was blacked out on the CIA report prior to its declassification said one of the UFO’s "had a slight dome on top" and also a "white light on top." The edge of the disc was glowing pinkish-white, he added. The UFO rose "vertically with the glow moving slowly around the perimeter in a clockwise direction, giving the appearance of a pinwheel."

Interpreter Ruben Efron told the CIA that visibility was excellent. As one UFO approached the train, he said, "the object gave the impression of gliding. No noise was heard and no exhaust was heard, and no exhaust glow or trail was seen by me." After the encounter, Senator Russell told the men with him: "We saw a flying disc. I wanted you boys to see it so that I would have witnesses," according to the CIA documents. And an FBI memo, dated November 4, 1955, also discusses the sighting, and admitted Col. Hathaway’s testimony "would support existence of a flying disc" Dr. Maccabee, of the Fund for UFO Research, believes that Senator Russell and his group never publicly revealed their incredible sightings "because they were no doubt advised not to talk. These documents provide startling new evidence that UFOs exist."

Mr. Tom Towers, in his January 20, 1957, column, "Aviation News," for the Los Angeles, CA, Examiner, printed the contents of a letter from Senator Russell, which was in response to a request for information about the sightings in Russia. Mr. Towers had originally contacted Senator Russell’s office by letter with the request that he be given permission to "break" the story. The Senator wrote: "Permit me to acknowledge your letters relative to reports that have come to you regarding aerial objects seen in Europe last year. I received your letter, but I have discussed this matter with the affected agencies of the government, and they are of the opinion that it is not wise to publicize this matter at this time. I regret very much that I am unable to be of assistance to you." The letter was dated 17 January, 1956.

"1977 DISC IN INDIANA"

by David Roeck

I was staying in a motel in Anderson, Indiana, in the month of July of 1977, when my travelling companion burst in through the door to summon me outside. Once in the parking lot, I gazed up above the rooftop to witness a great disc gliding gently across our field of view, moving slowly and tilted at an angle. It was slowly rotating clockwise and at so low an altitude (my guess is less than 1000 feet) as to make identification easy (for me, being familiar with conventional aircraft design). I knew right away that this aircraft was not a conventional earthly machine, and instantly felt the rush of recognition of once again beholding a magnificent craft from a more advanced world, or whatever. The last such time was ten years before. It appeared simply as a great frisbee-like disc with "gold-ball" white spherical lights arranged around the rim and all touching each other, and one spherical red light of about the same size on the top center of the craft. Within five minutes it had gradually moved out of view, having travelled in an arc, not in a straight line. It was as simple as that-- I only wished I'd been able to see it longer, and through binoculars. There were no sound, odors, or emissions. The time was 9:30 p.m., and the temperature was between 70° and 80°.

Full Report

My son and I were visiting a friend of mine in Weyauwega. I am reluctant to reveal the exact location out of concern for my friend's privacy as well as my own. However the general location is just North of Main street on the East side of 110 and South of the train tracks. My boy was sledding in the snow and I was taking pictures. It was in the evening and was starting to get dark pretty quickly. My son pointed up to the sky and we noticed some lights coming in from what I believe is the south west. At that point I just pointed the camera up and took the shots. The object really gave me the impression of a balloon - except for the lights. They seemed to cycle all different patterns. The object passed almost directly overhead (picture 1) and then headed south towards the train tracks (picture 2). As the object passed I could make out more of a disk shape than a balloon shape. I just remember my son asking me over and over what it was and I didn't have a clue.

Note: 2/24/03 - As of today we have been unable to contact this witness to further investigate this sighting. The witness has not responded to our emails and did not include any further contact information with the report. Any new information will be posted here.

Weyauwega
UFO
Photographic Evaluation

Anyone familiar with the subject of UFOs has seen the hazy, out-of-focus, or grainy pictures of what might be strange craft in the sky, so when a clear picture of an alleged UFO appears it is immediately regarded with suspicion. These two pictures are intriguing for what they appear to show - a twilight disk with no obvious signs of a hoax.

This alleged sighting took place in the vicinity of Weyauwega, Wisconsin early February of this year, as reported in the Feb. 26 issue of UFO Roundup and on UFOWisconsin.com.

The witness states that she was outside during the evening and happened to notice lights that passed overhead. She says that her impression was the lights were from a balloon, which should be noted, but the photographs that she took seem to depict something other than a hot-air balloon or dirigible.

The witness did not provide any further details and has chosen not to say any more about the sightings and photos. This should be taken into consideration when deciding on the validity of the sighting but could indicate a couple of things. The witness could simply be protecting her privacy, not unreasonable in an event as strange as this, or she does not wish to be identified as a hoaxer.

In either possibility, the photographs remain interesting and worthy of further scrutiny.

This picture clearly shows a circular-shaped object with three bright white lights and a small red light in a position high in the sky relative to the photographer. The camera appears to be well focused on the object in comparison to the trees in the foreground with enough light remaining in the sky for good depth-of-field.

A contrast-enhanced enlargement of the picture shows us image compression artifacts consistent with the JPEG compression used in digital cameras. (Indicated by the boxy appearence of the sky and granularity around the edges of the branches.)

The object appears to be behind the branches of the tree in the foreground, with the notable exception of the light on the lower-left portion of the disk. However, because of the brightness of the lights (which is more evident in the second photograph) it would be consistent that the thin branch would be washed out. Also notice there is a small branch evident in front of the much dimmer red light.

We can see no obvious digital manipulation of the image, such as smearing from a digital 'paintbrush' or inconsistencies where the object might have been carefully masked to appear as though it were behind the branches.

The object also appears washed out in the image, which is consistent with how an object might appear at a great height during a cloudy evening. This would say that it wasn't an object simply hoisted behind a tree or some kind of lighted frisbee.

This picture shows a disk-shaped object with four lights with an aqua cast in a position lower in the sky relative to the photographer than the first. Although less distinct than the first photograph, a circular or disk shaped outline can be seen through the tree branches.

Similarly to the first picture, the object seems to be behind the tree. This picture is less compelling than the first, but it, like the last, shows no obvious sign of digital tampering.

Conclusions

While there is nothing apparent in these images to give reason to doubt there integrity, there is still no way to be absolutely certain they were not faked. They were apparently taken with a relatively low-end digital camera, but there are plenty of ways that they could have been made to appear that way. If the pictures had been taken with a 35MM camera and the negatives were available for evaluation, we could be much more certain about their legitimacy.

With those reservations aside, I am intrigued by what they do show. If real, these pictures are some of the clearest I have seen of a low-flying daylight disk. Now, it's possible that Goodyear or the nice folks in the Air Force decided to send a top-secret prototype blimp to buzz Weyauwega, but I doubt it.
