A Terrifying Haunting in Georgia

In the 1870s, a small rural town was founded in the U.S. state of Georgia, just about 90 miles southwest of Savannah, by a sawmill operator named Allen Surrency, who lived with his family in a large, two-story farmhouse on the edge of the Altamaha River Swamp, near the railroad tracks that went through town. It was at first an idyllic life for the Surrency family for a time, until a strange series of events would unfold that would go on to become one of the most widely witnessed, well-documented hauntings, and most intense the world has ever seen. Unlike many other hauntings, where the phenomena start out somewhat innocuously and slowly intensify over time, the Surrency haunting started off with a bang in spectacular fashion, and would never really let up. The most commonly cited incident that kicked off the whole thing was when the family patriarch came […] Read More

The Ghosts Of Sackett Street

From the outside, 455a Sackett seems like an ordinary Brooklyn brownstone. Unassuming and uninviting, you wouldn’t look twice at the building if you were to pass by. However, to those few people that know, there’s a dark history associated with the building. A history of unexplained fires, disembodied voices of children, and other unimaginable tragedies has plagued the building and several former tenants. On April of 1998, Jane and her family moved into the brownstone unaware of its dark history. Jane: I wrote about this briefly in a prior article in 2001. To recap: we moved into 455a sackett street when I was 14 years old, on april 1, 1998. from the moment we moved in, something was so not right. It was an incredibly dark apartment… though we should have been thrilled because it was the first apartment we’d ever had with more than one floor. There were […] Read More

Dark and Mysterious Cursed Movie Productions

The entertainment industry is a popular breeding ground for strange stories and bizarre tales. It also seems to draw to it much talk of mysterious curses that seem to settle down upon productions, characters, or even certain members of the crew. I have covered curses said to haunt horror movies here at Mysterious Universe before, but here I thought I would branch out into other types of films said to have potently bad mojo hanging over them. Here I have put together some of the most supposedly cursed movie projects there are, and whether it is down to some supernatural force or just some uncommonly bad luck, they sure make for some eerie and unfortunate tales. Some supposed movie curses take the form of unrelenting bad luck and misfortune. In 1956, an all star cast and crew came together in the deserts of Utah to film the Howard Hughes […] Read More

Strange Military Encounters with the Jinn

Whenever one finds themselves to be a stranger in a strange land, there are bound to be clashes with what they know and the reality of this new foreign realm. Yet, in addition to culture shock and a deluge of new customs and traditions, there is also often a collision against the more paranormal aspects of this new place, and according to some reports, this is not only an encounter with strange magical beliefs but with actual paranormal entities beyond one’s own culture, understanding or experience. One place where this seems to have happened is in the Middle East, where soldiers far from home fighting in an alien environment and culture have allegedly on occasion come face to face with actual manifestations of one of the most ancient and persistent supernatural beings of Middle Eastern lore, creating strange and baffling encounters between the modern Western world and the unique […] Read More

A Spooky Tour Through Haunted Disneyland

In the world of strange hauntings and say places there is sometimes a place that seems like it couldn’t be more different from what one might imagine such a place should be. Perhaps nowhere else could be further from the typical impression of a haunted place than the world famous Disneyland, in Anaheim, Florida. This is a place of good times, bright characters, and happy, smiling people. How could it possibly be haunted? However, it seems that beyond the frolicking crowds and colorful characters there lurk other things of a more ghostly and frightening nature, and besides being a place of happiness and joy Disneyland seems to also be a place with its fair share of ghosts. Originally opened in opened on July 17, 1955, Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, was one of two theme parks built as part of the Disneyland Resort and is the only of the […] Read More

Bizarre Cases of Phantom White Hounds

One very pervasive feature upon the landscape of the strange is that of the spectral, phantom hound. No doubt the most famous of these is the black dogs of the British Isles; demonic entities often associated with the Devil that room the countryside in the form of fierce hounds the black of night, which were often seen as a portent of death and destruction. Yet there is a lesser known variety of these formidable entities in the form of similarly large, ghostly dogs that appear as a decidedly lighter shade; the white spirit hounds. Far from being the opposite to the malevolent nature of the black dogs, these paler versions have proven themselves to be just as sinister, and have haunted both folklore and the real world for ages. One type of ghostly white dog that goes quite far back into history and lore is the Galley Trot, which […] Read More

Iowa’s Frightening Malvern Manor is Haunted by Dark Entities and Ghosts of the Mentally-Disturbed

Every once and a while I’ll discover a haunted location that completely captivates me, even though I’ve never stepped foot inside. Malvern Manor is one of those places. There’s something about the shabby white building located in Malvern, Iowa that screams haunted. I often find that when buildings have gone through many incarnations they have that type of energy about them, as if the ghosts still residing within its walls are all fighting to have the building remembered for what it was when they were alive. Built in the late 1800s, Malvern Manor was a family-owned hotel that served as a comfortable place for traveling salesmen to rest their heads after long journeys across the country. For two dollars a night you got a warm bed and hot meals, and because of its close proximity to the railroad, the hotel was a success and booked solid nearly every night. Unfortunately, as […] Read More

Ghosts in the Machine: The Strange World of Haunted TVs

Even as we have progressed as a species and our technology has become ever more advanced, stories of hauntings and communications from the dead have always followed us around. The only difference is that they seemed to have evolved along beside us, changing along with our world and seemingly working their way into our technology. Whereas once ghosts leapt out from old decrepit houses and Ouija boards, now they seem to have a whole new world of avenues through which to break through the wall that separates their domain from our own, and these ways can be every bit as creepy, scary, and indeed terrifying as anything that has come before. One of the more interesting incarnations of hauntings to emerge in the past century is the rise of ghosts that seem to be drawn to TVs, allegedly traveling into these devices through unknown means and reaching out through […] Read More

Yuki-Onna, The Snow Ghost of Japan

In Japanese folklore, supernatural entities and phenomena are known as yōkai, and they come in many different shapes and sizes, good and bad. Some are monsters, some are demons. Others are shapeshifters, ghosts, or various inexplicable manifestations. You know, the sorts of things we often cover here. They’re all unique in their own strange ways, but given that we’re approaching winter, I thought we’d take a brief look at one of the coolest of these yōkai: Yuki-onna. The Snow Woman   Image: Sawaki Suushi /Wikimedia/Public Domain Often portrayed as a vengeful spirit who appears during terrible snowstorms, Yuki-onna, the Snow Woman, is also sometimes known as the Snow Hag, though this clashes with her usual description – that of a beautiful, ethereal woman with pale skin and haunting eyes. According to Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, an online collection of translated Japanese legends and ghost stories curated by Zack Davisson, the first documented Yuki-onna tale […] Read More

Visual Tracers: Optical Anomalies and Ghostly Phenomena Through the Ages

“No ghost was every seen by two pairs of eyes.” At least, such were the words of Thomas Carlyle, Scottish philosopher and historian, though perhaps modern science lends some credence to this notion. With this in mind, there is an obscure, and certainly unusual optical condition that was recently brought to my attention, through a correspondence with a woman who had been a longtime experiencer of the ailment in question. Known as palinopsia, it is a condition that typically results in unusual, recurring visual “tracers”, which may appear regardless of any preceding stimuli. Although it is not a diagnosis unto itself, palinopsia is subdivided into at least two groupings: those which are termed illusory palinopsia, and those which are hallucinatory in nature. Causes underlying these may include migraine headaches, various prescription medications, or even head trauma, to name a few. “What makes my particular tracers unique,” she told me, “is that […] Read More
