1949: What Is a Kachina?

Heard of the Kachina dolls of the Hopi/Pueblo indians? Here is a great description of what they are and how they fit in to the religious system of the indians written by Harold Colton in 1949. Ever since J. Walter Fewkes, of the Smithsonian Institution, wrote his first illustrated report on Hopi kachinas, in 1894, a growing number of people have become interested in the Hopi Indians and their delightful carved and painted kachina dolls. For years collectors have treasured these small representations of Hopi supernatural beings without being able to learn much about them. Since many people do not know about either kachinas or kachina dolls, we will diverge a little to explain what they are. In the northern parts of the states of New Mexico and Arizona are a number of compact Indian villages with flat-roofed houses built of stone or adobe. Because these Indians lived in […] Read More

Coyote and the Jar

Coyote was given a big jar to carry when the people came to this world. He was told not to lift the lid… but the jar was heavy and coyote was curious to know what he was carrying. He set the jar down, lifted the lid and peeked inside. All the stars rushed out and they burned his nose as they flew past. Poor coyote could only catch a few and these are now in their proper places in the skies (the constellations), the others are just tossed about, and some of them, not tightly held in place, fall back to earth. This is why there are few constellations and why there are shooting stars and why coyote has a black nose. (Hopi)

Mashkussuts: Bear cubs

When spring finally came to the country, the bear woke from hibernation. She got out of her den and said “The spring has arrived again.” She went for a walk to the place where most of the snow had melted so that she could eat berries. She left her children behind where they were still asleep. After she had finished eating, she went back to her den and took a nap. While she was sleeping, her children woke up and saw that their mother’s mouth was purple from eating berries. One cub said to the other, “Look, what’s that in mother’s mouth, sticking to her teeth?” The other replied, “Let’s get them out.” And they took the berries out that had been sticking in mother bear’s mouth, and ate them. The first cub said, “They taste very good. Let’s follow her footprints and see if we can find the […] Read More

Haliksai! This Is How It Was

Based on the Hopi Creation Story a New Thought on the Valley of the Kings (Photo credit: Wikipedia) (This is but one version based on Hopi Creation) A very long time ago…the world was nothing but water. Far to the east and to the west lived two female goddesses. Hurung Whuti…of the East was the goddess of rocks, clay, and minerals. Her house was a kiva. She usually had one gray and one yellow fox skin that was tied to the top of the ladder leading into her house. In the West…there lived another Hurung Whuti in a similar kiva. She had a large turtle-shell rattle on her ladder. The Sun rose and set on this world of water. Shortly before Sun appeared in the east he would dress himself in the gray fox skin. This would create the white dawn of the Hopi. After a bit, he would […] Read More

CHIEF DAN EVEHEMA’S MESSAGE TO MANKIND

I am very glad to have this time to send a message to you. We are celebrating a time in our history which is both filled with joy and sadness. I am very glad that our Hindu brothers have given us this opportunity to share these feelings with you because we know many of you are having the same troubles. We Hopi believe that the human race has passed through three different worlds and life ways since the beginning. At the end of each prior world, human life has been purified or punished by the Great Spirit “Massauu” due mainly to corruption, greed, and turning away from the Great Spirit’s teachings. The last great destruction was the flood which destroyed all but a few faithful ones who asked and received a permission from the Great Spirit to live with Him in this new land. The Great Spirit said, “It […] Read More
