Wakantanka: The Breath Giver

by Wambdi Wicasa Many, many seasons ago, Wakantanka, the Breath Giver, the Holy one, walked in the trees of the Paha Sapa, the Black Hills. The trees were cool and the music of the streams made him happy. Over the high hard rock the Eagle soared on great wings. Deer looked at Wakantanka, and their delicate feet were full of beauty and grace. Moose and Elk dipped their great heads into the water to pull the sweet lake grasses. The great Black Bears, afraid of nothing, padded toward the honey trees. Antelope stood deep in the meadow grasses. But with all this beauty around Him, Wakantanka was uneasy. He was happy and loved the Hills He had made, but there was no one He could talk to. There was no one He could love. No one who could return His love. To all his creatures He had given something […] Read More

The Path

“To all of both sides I say this. Have patience. Just realize where you come from. This is the essence of wisdom.” We are what we are…human… and, although we cannot change the world, we can change ourselves. Self-change is what this site is all about. This page is rather long. One of the reasons I made it so long is this… If you do not possess the ability to sit and read it all the way thru, then how can you slow down and effect change within? When will you find the time to listen to the voice within? How will you develop patience? I do not have degrees or pieces of paper to display that state I took this course or that I passed that class. I learned so much from others, not just people but places and animals. I learned thru trial and error. I learned from mistakes. I also learned […] Read More

Ceremonies

Greeting the Sun ceremony This ceremony is adapted from a lucid dream I had one night. During my dreamtime journey, I was a Native American maiden accompanied by the tribe’s Medicine Woman, with whom I was in apprenticeship. It was just before Sunrise, the Milky Way spanned the sky, and the celestial dome was filled with twinkling stars. We were facing the East, awaiting the sunrise in silent contemplation. With the first rays of Light, we bowed to the ground, offered sacred herbs, and greeted the Sun. When you first awaken in the morning, face the East. Offer some herbs or a pinch of cornmeal toward the sun. Think about your plans for the day: where you are going to be, who are you are going to be with. Feel your connection to All-That-Is flow through your body. Offer prayers of gratitude for what you have and what is […] Read More

Coyote keeps his Name

(OKANANAGON) One time the Great Spirit called all the Animal people together.  They came from all over the earth to one camp and set up their lodges.  Spirit Chief said there was going to be a change; there was to be a new kind of people. He told all the Animal people they would now each have a name. “Some of you have names already; some have no names.  Tomorrow, however, everyone will have a name.  This name will be yours forever, for all your descendants.  In the morning you must come to my lodge and choose a name for yourself.  The first one to come may choose any name he wants.  The next person will take any other name.  That is how it will go.  And to each person I will give a responsibility.” All the Animal people wanted to have powerful names and to be well-known. They wanted t be first at Old Man’s […] Read More

Eagle

The eagle is symbol of the zenith. A great reminder of your own ability to soar to great heights. Eagles are messengers from heaven and are the embodiment of the spirit of the sun. Those with an Eagle totem need to have an involvement with creation; a willingness to experience extremes; a willingness to use your ability even if it means getting “scorched” a little as you fly high; a willingness to seek out your true emotions. A demanding totem, but one that offers so much reward at the end of the journey. Its four-toed feet remind you to stay grounded even when soaring high; Its talons remind you to grasp the things of the earth; Its sharp beak shows you when to speak, how much, and how strongly. This totem will show you opportunities and how to ride the winds to your benefit. Eagle people can live in […] Read More
