2017: Breakthrough Artificial Photosynthesis Cleans Polluted Air, Makes Energy

An invention by scientists at the University of Central Florida turns greenhouse gases into clean air, producing fuel at the same time. By mixing titanium with organic molecules, they created metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) tuned to blue light. These ‘light-harvesting antennae’ created reactions which turned CO2 into two reduced forms of carbon, formate, and formamides, described as two kinds of solar fuel. … the system could one day be set up next to facilities that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, where it would capture the CO2 and break it down into harmless organic materials, creating solar fuel in the process. … ‘This work is a breakthrough,’ said UCF Assistant Professor Fernando Uribe-Romo. ‘Tailoring materials that will absorb a specific color of light is very difficult from the scientific point of view… While scientists have long investigated the idea, it’s remained difficult to find a way for visible light to […] Read More

2015: Eleven Things Other Countries Do Way Better Than the US

America! Land of the free, home of the brave, and the greatest country on the face of the planet, right? A country with seemingly limitless natural resources, and according to many politicians, anointed by God herself to lead the world out of the wilderness and into a bright new age of liberty and justice for all. Too bad the road to that vision is pockmarked with so many potholes because we haven’t raised enough taxes on people who can afford to pay to fill them. Americans, maybe more than anyone on Earth, are guilty of the sin of hubris and excessive pride. As the great Greek poets of the ancient world have taught us, hubris can lead to some really bad outcomes. The reality is that a good portion of the rest of the world has far outpaced the United States in things like healthcare. While the U.S. has […] Read More
