1949: What Is a Kachina?

Heard of the Kachina dolls of the Hopi/Pueblo indians? Here is a great description of what they are and how they fit in to the religious system of the indians written by Harold Colton in 1949. Ever since J. Walter Fewkes, of the Smithsonian Institution, wrote his first illustrated report on Hopi kachinas, in 1894, a growing number of people have become interested in the Hopi Indians and their delightful carved and painted kachina dolls. For years collectors have treasured these small representations of Hopi supernatural beings without being able to learn much about them. Since many people do not know about either kachinas or kachina dolls, we will diverge a little to explain what they are. In the northern parts of the states of New Mexico and Arizona are a number of compact Indian villages with flat-roofed houses built of stone or adobe. Because these Indians lived in […] Read More

1986: Native American Prophecies

“North American Indian Prophecies”– excerpts from a talk given by Lee Brown (Cherokee) at the 1986 Continental Indigenous Council, Fairbanks, Alaska “There was the cycle of the mineral, the rock. There was the cycle of he plant. And now we are in the cycle of the animal coming to the end of that and beginning the cycle of the human being. When we get into the cycle of the human being, the highest and greatest powers that we have will be released to us. They will be released from that light or soul that we carry to the mind. But right now we’re coming to the end f the animal cycle and we have investigated ourselves and learned what it is to be like an animal on this earth. At the beginning of this cycle of time, long ago, the Great Spirit came down and He made an appearance […] Read More

2002: Sacred Amulets

These two Sacred Amulets were found in an ancient burial tomb in close proximity to an ancient pyramid located in the Mississippi River Valley. According to Legend, this was the burial tomb of a High Priest and Priestess who inhabited that ancient city well over 30,000 years ago.  They were laid to rest together so they might share the same union in the afterworld that they shared on the earth plane. The strength of their union and concurrent time of death was indicated by the symbolic placement of their hands, one holding the others. The Sacred Amulet showed bears the image of a bird-headed being. This being could be interpreted as Horace or Riegel, or perhaps the Winged Beings that are described in Ken Carey’s book – Return of the Bird Tribes. The Sacred Amulet, which adorned the High Priestess, bears the image of a winged being with a birds head, or helmet? You will notice that […] Read More

Truths

“Ho! Mitakuye Oyasin.” The Truth We Seek Truth is often defined not by ourselves, but by others. It takes a real determination to begin the search for truth. And… it is a very difficult search I assure you. There is so much to wade through. There are so many opinions and so many sayings do this or do that… We always think we have enough time. Do we really? How far are you willing to reach deep inside yourself? Are you willing to really think? Are you willing to seek so that you may find? It is very easy to just skim the surface and not make any real changes in ourselves. It is easy to simply pay lip service and present an illusion to the world. If that is your attitude, then look no further, you have made your choice. Just remember though, illusions have a way of crumbling sooner […] Read More

The Seventh Fire

Neesh-wa-swi ish-ko-day-kawn’ The People of the Seventh Fire More than 1,000 years ago my people, the Anishinabeg, lived along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. There were so many and they were so powerful that it is said that one could stand at the top of the highest mountain, look in all directions, and not see to the ends of the nation. They traveled the waterways by canoe and in winter they traveled with dog sled. Their life was full of abundance and beauty. The Anishinabeg developed their natural heritage of wisdom and power through dreams and the way of the circle. They followed the path of the spirit, walking in balance, in harmony with all beings. They communicated with the animals and fish that provided them with food. Trees and plants told them of their medicines. They knew the magic and mystery of the spirals. Using this knowledge, […] Read More

1958: Hopi Prophecy

Hopi Elders pass warnings and prophecies from generation to generation through oral traditions and reference to ancient rock pictographs and tablets. Hopi Blue Star or Blue Kachina Prophecy An ancient Hopi Indian prophecy states, “When the Blue Star Kachina makes its appearance in the heavens, the Fifth World will emerge”. This will be the Day of Purification. The Hopi name for the star Sirius is Blue Star Kachina. It will come when the Saquasohuh (Blue Star) Kachina dances in the plaza and removes his mask. [Note: Reality is a metaphor in which we quest to find answers to the greater truth of who we are and why we are here. Something in our souls tells us that change is happening on a global consciousness level. The blue frequency is part of that. Sirius is Isis – Return to the feminine of higher frequency energies – Rebirth of Consciousness. Blue links to higher/future frequencies of consciousness as we spiral up through the patterns […] Read More

Haliksai! This Is How It Was

Based on the Hopi Creation Story a New Thought on the Valley of the Kings (Photo credit: Wikipedia) (This is but one version based on Hopi Creation) A very long time ago…the world was nothing but water. Far to the east and to the west lived two female goddesses. Hurung Whuti…of the East was the goddess of rocks, clay, and minerals. Her house was a kiva. She usually had one gray and one yellow fox skin that was tied to the top of the ladder leading into her house. In the West…there lived another Hurung Whuti in a similar kiva. She had a large turtle-shell rattle on her ladder. The Sun rose and set on this world of water. Shortly before Sun appeared in the east he would dress himself in the gray fox skin. This would create the white dawn of the Hopi. After a bit, he would […] Read More

Coyote and the Jar

Coyote was given a big jar to carry when the people came to this world. He was told not to lift the lid… but the jar was heavy and coyote was curious to know what he was carrying. He set the jar down, lifted the lid and peeked inside. All the stars rushed out and they burned his nose as they flew past. Poor coyote could only catch a few and these are now in their proper places in the skies (the constellations), the others are just tossed about, and some of them, not tightly held in place, fall back to earth. This is why there are few constellations and why there are shooting stars and why coyote has a black nose. (Hopi)
