The Control of Candy Jones

Colin Bennett On 31 December 1972, in the lavish apartment suite of a New York lawyer friend, the well-known 61year-old radio presenter Long John Nebel married Candy Jones, 47, an internationally famous fashion model. The guests on this happy occasion certainly had plenty of things to talk about. The five men who broke into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate office building in Washington DC the previous summer were facing charges of burglary, conspiracy and wire-tapping. Already, there were rumours that this affair might go all the way to the White House. Though the guests were no doubt happy, the Vietnam campaign still had two years to run, and almost all Americans knew what the result was going to be. Nebel was the Art Bell of his day, and his all-night radio show had an audience of several millions, but that night, his mind was not on […] Read More

1964: FBI file links Kennedy to Monroe’s death

BOBBY KENNEDY’S affair with the screen idol Marilyn Monroe has been documented, but a secret FBI file suggests the late US attorney-general was aware of – and perhaps even a participant in – a plan “to induce” her suicide. The detailed three-page report implicates the Hollywood actor Peter Lawford, Monroe’s psychiatrist, staff and her publicist in the plot. The allegations suggest the 36-year-old actress, who had a history of staging attention-seeking suicide attempts, was deliberately given the means to fake another suicide on August 4, 1962. But this time, it is suggested, she was allowed to die as she sought help. The document, hidden among thousands of pages released under freedom-of-information laws last October, was received by the FBI on October 19, 1964 – two years after her death – and titled simply “ROBERT F KENNEDY“. It was compiled by an unnamed former special agent working for the then […] Read More

2007: How Bobby betrayed Marilyn

March 17, 2007 The FBI‘s secret account of the actress’s death suggests an eye-popping conspiracy, writes Philippe Mora. HISTORY is a continuum but there are various events you can put a pin in that have a huge effect on the future. The world changed forever for a generation after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, followed a few years later by the murders of his brother Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The strange prologue to these turning points is the death of Marilyn Monroe. Despite thousands of books, films, reports and stories in all media, these tragic events remain a source of unanswered questions for pop culture and for serious scholars. The best history comes from primary documents from the time that offer a contemporary snapshot, not filtered by passing decades. Last October the FBI released thousands of documents from its 20th century files under the […] Read More
