2015: Ohio Sheriffs: Get your Concealed Carry Permits

Dayton’s WHIO (AM 1290) is reporting that two Ohio county sheriffs took to Twitter in the hours after news of the attack in San Bernadino, CA to urge Ohioans to obtain concealed handgun licenses. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones in a Twitter exchange called on people to get a conceal and carry permit. “I have said it in the past and I said it (Wednesday) , people should get their conceal and carry permit and carry a gun where permitted. You don’t want to be that person hiding under the desk or in a closet waiting for someone to come rescue you. It may be too late.” Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer agrees. “I encourage all law-abiding citizens to get Conceal Carry Permits,” he said. “I think it’s so important that we’re turning around the permits in 24 hours. We have to arm ourselves and protect ourselves because they’re […] Read More

2015: Black Man Pulled Over by White Cop for ‘Making Direct Eye Contact’

An African American man in Dayton, Ohio was recently pulled over by a Caucasian police officer. His “crime”? “Making direct eye contact” with the officer. That is no exaggeration. John Felton was driving in Dayton when an officer pulled him over. The Dayton Police trailed him for two miles before finally pulling him over in front of his mother’s house. Knowing that he had done nothing wrong, and having been mindful of the officer following him, Felton asked the officer what he had done to warrant the stop. The officer claimed that Felton had failed to use his turn signal a full 100 feet before the stop sign he had just stopped at. The officer acknowledged that he, in fact, had signaled, but he said it was just shy of 100 feet. Eventually, the officer admits that the real reason for the stop. After running his license and finding […] Read More

Grayson, Toomey lead in small-donor funding in competitive Senate races

The 2016 presidential candidates are well ensconced in the money race, but they are not the only ones infected with donation fever. Candidates in competitive Senate races are trying to raise as much money as they possibly can, while also seeking to boast that they receive more small-dollar donations, a sign that they are more in touch with voters and the grassroots. Thus far, it looks like Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) have the most boasting to do. Among major candidates in competitive Senate races, Grayson received the largest proportion of his funds from small-dollar donations (under $200) at 47 percent, or almost $213,000 out of nearly $454,000 raised. Toomey, on the other hand, has the largest dollar amount raised from small donations, at just under $1.6 million. But he also raised the most in total, nearly $13.8 million, so his small-donation share is just 11 percent. […] Read More

2015: Cop Goes For Non-Lethal Leg Shot To Stop Man With Knife

Police Officer Jim Short is on paid administrative leave after shooting a man who was wielding a knife. But unlike the usual reports of police shootings Officer Short fired on Kenneth Coleman’s leg, causing him a non-fatal injury, that nonetheless prevented him from attacking the officer with the knife. Kenneth Coleman Jr., 31, was taken to the Dayton, Ohio area Miami Valley Hospital and is, by all estimations, expected to survive. Leg-shots can certainly be fatal, but they have a far less statistically-likely chance of leading to death than a center-mass or head shot. At the same time, when a person threatening is stationary, there is no greater risk to officers to fire at the legs, versus center mass. Short, 44, seemed to realize this when he discharged his weapon after Coleman repeatedly refused to drop the knife outside of the apartment building that Officer Short had been called. […] Read More

2014: The Prison State Of America

Submitted by Chris Hedges via TruthDig, Prisons employ and exploit the ideal worker. Prisoners do not receive benefits or pensions. They are not paid overtime. They are forbidden to organize and strike. They must show up on time. They are not paid for sick days or granted vacations. They cannot formally complain about working conditions or safety hazards. If they are disobedient, or attempt to protest their pitiful wages, they lose their jobs and can be sent to isolation cells. The roughly 1 million prisoners who work for corporations and government industries in the American prison system are models for what the corporate state expects us all to become. And corporations have no intention of permitting prison reforms that would reduce the size of their bonded workforce. In fact, they are seeking to replicate these conditions throughout the society. States, in the name of austerity, have stopped providing prisoners […] Read More

Two White Men Took BB-Guns Off Walmart Shelves, Loaded Them, Shot Up Store, Weren’t Shot By Police

The case of John Crawford III needs little introduction, especially to regular Counter Current News readers. Our citizen journalists were on the scene before even the local Dayton area media had made it out to the Beavercreek Walmart early in August of this year. From the start, we have had extensive coverage of the shooting by Officer Sean Williams, and the protests that have followed ever since. The initial report called in to 911 by Ronald Ritchie maintained that John Crawford had taken what we later discovered was a BB-guy, and “loaded” it. While this was very far from the truth, Ronald Ritchie has still never been prosecuted for lying to the 911 operate and inducing panic. In spite of the fact that John Crawford had actually done nothing wrong or illegal whatsoever – never even turning with the toy gun pointing towards either officer – he was shot […] Read More

2014: Chaos in the Execution Chamber: Witness Recounts Botched Killing that Caused Okla. Prisoner’s Fatal Heart Attack

“He began writhing, lifting his shoulders up off the gurney and his head up off the gurney. He was clenching his jaw, exhaling.” NERMEEN SHAIKH: An Oklahoma prisoner who was supposed to be executed Tuesday night died instead of a massive heart attack after his lethal injection was botched. Clayton Lockett was injected with an untested cocktail of lethal drugs. After struggling violently on the gurney, doctors halted the killing 13 minutes in, when discovering Lockett was still conscious and trying to speak. Doctors say he suffered a ruptured vein, interrupting the flow of the lethal drugs. About 30 minutes after that point, Lockett died of a heart attack when the drugs had spread through his body. Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton described what happened. ROBERT PATTON: As those that were inside witnessed, it was determined that he was sedated at approximately seven minutes into the execution. At that time, we […] Read More

2014: Water, Water, Everywhere!

I was skimming back through my copy of Fort’s The Book of the Damned as I often do when I happened upon another fascinating phenomenon which Fort describes and, in his unique humorist way, theorizes on a possible explanation for. In Lo!, Fort relates tale after tale of water seemingly manifesting within closed rooms with no external source apparent. In almost every case, it seems that great care was taken to attempt to track down where the water might be originating from, but none could be found. In nearly every case of this mysterious water manifestation, there were other strange phenomena occurring as well, and not entirely unlike poltergeist phenomena, young children are often in the vicinity of the water outbreaks. As if that were not enough, Fort also finds reports of water manifesting in isolated spots outside as well, usually focusing on a single tree. Classic Examples Fort […] Read More
